What is supraspinous ligament?

The supraspinous ligament is a strong fibrous band that runs along the tips of the spinous processes of the vertebrae in the spine. It connects the spinous processes from the seventh cervical vertebra to the sacrum, providing stability and support to the spine.

The supraspinous ligament is part of the ligamentous system of the spine, along with the interspinous ligament and ligamentum flavum. It helps to limit excessive flexion and extension of the spine, as well as provide support during movements such as bending and twisting.

Injuries to the supraspinous ligament can occur from trauma, repetitive stress, or degenerative conditions such as arthritis. Symptoms of a supraspinous ligament injury may include pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion in the spine.

Treatment for a supraspinous ligament injury typically involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgical intervention. Strengthening exercises and proper body mechanics can help prevent future injuries to the supraspinous ligament.
